Reptiles & Amphibians

The reptile fauna of southern Laos has only recently been investigated and is still one of the least known in the world. An enormous amount of reptiles have meanwhile been recorded in the Xe Pian area. Several new species have been found since 2002. Reptiles form a major portion of Xe Pian's rich biodiversity and are a basic part of the food chain. Amphibians and reptiles are used by locals as a food source. Some frogs are consumed by local people and might be found on local markets. The same is true for turtles and turtle eggs.

The Siamese crocodile population found inside and just outside the northern boundary of Xe Pian is of global conservation significance.

Xe Pian contains populations of 2 key species of turtle:

  • Asiatic Soft-shell Turtle
  • Asian Giant Soft-shell Turtle

How to See Reptiles and Amphibians
Reptiles can best be found close to water. During daytime, snakes are difficult to find, but most lizards are active (except geckos). To find snakes you have to search at dawn or the first 2 hours of the night. They can be found in bushes, on trees, in the grass or in the soil, and beyond large stones or leaf litter.

If you want to look for reptiles, you should wear gloves and good footwear to avoid being bitten. For amphibians you may need rubber boots, as you might have to walk through small streams. Do not stick your fingers in the mouth after touching amphibians. Frogs are very slippery, so you better catch them with gloves or a net.
