Wetlands and Diverse Habitats
The vast Xe Pian terrain is mostly hilly and low, with extensive areas of flat lands and some mountains. The Xe Kong plains in the east, criss-crossed by the pristine Xe Pian, Xe Khampho and Xe Kong rivers, contain seasonal wetlands and small lakes which are vital to the conservation of large water birds. These wetlands, peat swamps, perennial streams and large area of undisturbed forest play a crucial role in the distribution and seasonal movements of wide-ranging large mammal species and water birds. Scarce migrant birds and species not previously recorded in Laos have been noted here.
The many mineral licks in Xe Pian, grassy glades, seasonal pools and mud wallows are very important for wildlife, especially large water birds and mammals such as elephants and wild cattle.
